Trans fats in vegetable oil increase cholesterol-MFDA

Maldives Food and Drug Authority has stated that the vegetable oils imported to Maldives with the “cholesterol free” label does not have cholesterol but has fats that increases the bad cholesterol level of a person.
MFDA stated this in the meeting held at the Ministry of Health to create awareness in the media regarding illegal advertisement of food items by the media.
Maldives Food and Drug Authority stated that the authority does not have to inform the public regarding the amount of fats in the vegetable oil and the amount of sugar in canned and imported food items. The authority stated that it is enough for a person to read the label and ingredients of the food item.
The authority appealed the people to always check the label, the expiry date and the ingredients before buying any food item.
When asked regarding whether the authority checks the quality of the fishes sold in the fish market, the authority stated that they do check time to time.
Health Minister’s state minister Dr. Aishath Rameela, Deputy Minister Mohamed Rafeeg Hassan, Nazeera Najeeb from Health Protection Agency and Sajidha Mohamed from Food and Drug Authority participated in the meeting.
