Maldives Police Service has stated that the intelligence of the Police came to know of the prison escape of the convicted murderers Ibrahim Shahum and Fariyah Ahmed only after 24 hours of their escape.
Superintendent of Police, Ismail Naveen stated that in the operation which began after the escape of the two convicts, Shahum was apprehended around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.
“Shahum, who had tried to hide his identity in a weak disguise tried to escape the room of a guest house by jumping out the window when police had arrived at the scene,” he said.
Superintendent of Police, Abdullah Satheeh said that they are currently investigating the case. He added that the prisoners had escaped from the toilet of the 14th cell of the 7th wing of the 9th unit of the prison facility. He also revealed that these two had hid from the police in the adjacent toilet afterwards.
Naveen said that they are unable to provide any information regarding those who had helped the two inmates in their escape, while adding that a security breach had led to the escape. He added that the escape was pre-planned, since 22 bars of the jail had been sawed.
Sateeh revealed that since the inmates are able to interact with each other from 7:00 a.m till 10:00 p.m every day, they gain the opportunity to plot such escapes.
Naveen revealed that police had learnt about the escape 24 hours later. He also added that a 32 year old has been apprehended under the charges of aiding the escapees.
