A contract agreement was signed between Ministry of Environment and Energy and M.T. Hojgaard to build coastal protection structures in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Faresmaathodaa. Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim signed the contract on behalf of the Ministry and the Director of projects, Mr. Kenneth Holm signed the agreement on behalf of M.T. Hojgaard .
The purpose of this project is to protect and prevent the areas of the island vulnerable to erosion from eroding further and to safeguard the island from flooding impacts. Faresmaathoda is one of the islands that was most impacted in the flooding event of 2007. The project was designed with assistance from government of Denmark through UNDP, as support to the climate change adaptation program of the government of Maldives. The construction cost of the project is MVR 37,802,962.85 and is expected to be completed within 07 months from the contract award date. The balance funds required for the construction works will be borne by the government through its Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP).
The project will see the construction of a 734 m rock boulder revetment on the south west of Faresmaathodaa. Similar coastal protection projects are currently being carried out in Noonu atoll Holhudhoo, Raa atoll Maduvvari, Kaafu atoll Villingili, Meemu atoll Naalaafushi, Gaafu dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo and Kaafu atoll Maafushi.
