Farming expert, Salah Shihab has underscored the importance of prioritizing growing crops that were most suitable for the Maldives to increase our food security and reduce the quantity of imported food items.
He made this remark officiating the Farmer’s Day celebration event. He noted that the Maldives depended entirely on food imports, he said we were extremely vulnerable to instabilities in the world food market and food prices could become too expensive for Maldivians.
Salah Shihab said that farming can be done as a family business. He said that it can be done within ones home, flats and even uninhabited islands.
He said that policies should be made to develop the farming industry of Maldives. He said that the farming industry should be among the number one priorities of the government.
He pointed out growing more fruits and vegetables and making them more affordable, and increasing public awareness as important factors to ensure our diet included all food items that provide necessary nutrients.
