The Maldives signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Spain for collaboration between their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
On behalf of the Government of Maldives, the MOU was signed by Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations. On behalf of the Government of Spain, the MOU was signed Román Oyarzun Marchesi, Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations.
The MOU declares the desire of both nations to strengthen existing bilateral relations by formalizing mechanisms of political consultations towards enhancing cooperation between them.
The agreement stipulates cooperation in the areas of climate change, water and sanitation, renewable energies, fisheries, tourism, education and culture.
At the signing ceremony, held at the Permanent Mission of Spain to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Sareer highlighted that the MOU is being signed at the landmark 35th anniversary year of bilateral relations and would open new avenues for closer cooperation on significant areas of mutual concern.
Ambassador Oyarzun Marchesi noted that the MOU would enable Spain to engage with the Maldives more directly through an institutional arrangement, as well as facilitate the promotion of closer collaboration within the European Union.
The ceremony was attended by Mr Salim Waheed, Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations, Mr Manuel Pablos López, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Spain, and Mr Hassan Hussain Shihab, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the Maldives.
