(VNEWS): Member of Parliament for Jumhooree Party, Kanditheemu Constituency, Mohamed Hussain has raised his concerns addressing some the issues faced by the Maldives, during the committee session of the Human Right's of Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
MP Hussain met members of the Committee at the ongoing 131st IPU General Parliamentary Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland.
Tuesday's agenda for the assembly was entitled, `The role of the IPU and national parliaments in enacting laws that shape policies for effective response and preparedness for Ebola and other infectious disease outbreaks' which was addressed upon Zambia's request.
During the meeting, all members agreed that they are deeply concerned by the fact that the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa constitutes an escalating health emergency of international concern.
At the meeting, a Youth Forum was also held for youth parliamentarians. All Maldivian members under the age of 45 years took part in this forum.
Additionally, a Women's Parliamentary Forum was also held where MDP MP for Addu Meedhoo Constituency, Rozaina Adam also applied to represent the Asia Pacific region. However, it was noted that Rozaina did not attain this position as an MP of Philippines achieved the position instead.
Since opportunity to apply for IPU's Presidency candidacy was made open for the Asian Pacific region this year, MDP MP for Henveiyru Uthuru Constituency, Abdullah Shahid also registered for application. The newly elected President for IPU will be announced at the Assembly tomorrow.
Maldivian delegations at the Assembly include, Speaker of Parliament and MP for Fuvahmulah South District, Abdullah Maseeh, Vilmaafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussein Manik, Maafannu South MP Abdullah Rifau, Funadhoo MP Ali Saleem, Henveiyru North MP Abdullah Shahid, Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam and Kanditheemu MP, Mohamed Hussein.
