Maldives Customs Service has revealed that export statistics for the month of September show a 17% increase when compared to that of September 2014. As such, FOB value of MVR 244.7 million worth of goods were exported from Maldives in September 2014 while MVR 208.8 million worth of goods were exported in September 2013.
According to Customs, the main reason for this increase is largely due to the fact that exports to Thailand, our largest exports market, increased by 43%. It must also be noted that exports to France, UK and USA increased by 80% in September 2014 compared to the same period last year.
Customs revealed that the total revenue collected during September 2014 has increased by 29% compared to the same period last year. A total of MVR 175.6 million was collected as customs duty and other charges this September while this figure stood at MVR 135.7 million for the same period last year.
Import statistics for September 2014 show a 16% increase when compared to the same period last year. Looking at the distribution of imports in September 2014, fuel was the most imported item with a CIF value of MVR 742.1 million which accounts for 28% of the total imports for the period. This is followed by machinery and electronics and food items with CIF value of MVR 472.4 million (18%) and MVR 458.1 million (17%) respectively.
Top most imported countries for the month of September are United Arab Emirates (UAE) MVR 699.6 million (26%), Singapore MVR 393.1 million (15%), and India MVR 237.1 million (9%).
Thailand led the top five countries’ list with a total of MVR 73.2 million worth of goods. This accounts for 30% of the total exports for the period. France and UK followed in the second and third position with MVR 45.1 million (18%) and MVR 24.7 million (10%) respectively.
