World’s natural resources are not used sustainably- Minister Nazim
Head of Maldives National Disaster Management Center, Minister of National Defense and Security, Mohammed Nazim has stated that the world’s natural resources are not used sustainably.

Minister Nazim made this remark in his statement issued on the occasion of International Disaster Reduction Day, marked around the globe on October 13th.

He said that the world is facing unimaginable losses and international level disasters due to global climate change and sea level rise.

The Minister noted that these include hurricane winds, flash floods, extended periods of draught in the north east monsoon and its resulting impact of islands needing a supply of safe drinking water, the tidal floods experienced during the south west monsoons and the tidal floods caused by the sea level rise. He added that the severity and the number of incidences are on the rise, from year to year.

Minister Nazim said that the tourism industry, the main economical industry of Maldives is under threat because of these environmental challenges. He said that the government is working to prepare resorts to such natural disasters to reduce the risk and damages.

Nazim said that they are conducting various activities to reduce the amount of damage caused by disasters while requesting for the maximum support of the public in such works.

The minister noted several awareness programs being held in the capital city, as well as the atolls regarding disaster reduction.
