TAM to raise their worries regarding Education Minister’s speech to UNESCO

Teachers Association of Maldives (TAM) has decided to raise their concerns regarding the Teachers Day statement of the Education Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham to UNESCO.

President of TAM, Athif Abdul Hakeem told Miadhu Daily that the Minister did not include four matters highlighted in the slogan by the UNESCO. He said that the teachers association is very concerned regarding this issue.

Athif said that the Minister did note some of the issues however the most important four issues were ignored. He said that 95 percent of the teachers have expressed their worries regarding this matter.

Athif said that the statement is now being prepared to be translated to English to be sent to UNESCO and UNDP. He said that the association will announce next week to find a translator to translate the statement to English.

He said that the association wants to make the translation as independent as possible so therefore seeks another party for the task. He said that the association always wants justice and fairness and transparency in all matters.

October 5 marks the 20th anniversary of World Teachers' Day. The day was designated to garner support for teachers and show appreciation for their contribution to our future.

This year, UNESCO is calling for more investment in the number of the teachers as well as the teaching quality. Many countries suffer from a severe shortage. It says four million teachers are required to meet universal primary education by the end of next year.
