President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent a congratulatory message to the President of Turkey, His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for successfully foiling the attempted coup d’état to overthrow the democratically elected Government of Turkey on 14 July 2016.
The President’s message reads as follows:
“The Government and the people of the Maldives congratulate Your Excellency and the people of Turkey for successfully foiling the attempted coup d’état to overthrow the democratically elected Government of Turkey on 14 July 2016.”
“My Government was profoundly concerned and disturbed by the news of the coup attempt, and I wish to express the full solidarity of the Maldives with Your Excellency’s Government. Unconstitutional attempts to overthrow the democratically elected governments have no place in democratic societies. The Maldives condemns all forms of military coups and all attempts to alter the democratic order.”
“Since your election to office in 2003, you have inspired millions of people in Turkey and all over the world, standing for justice, democracy, moderation, and above all, development. Maldivians recall vividly the historic visit you made to the Maldives in February 2005, which helped to place the long-standing bilateral relationship between the Maldives and Turkey on a steep upward trajectory.”
“I pray for your good health, happiness, and success and prosperity for Turkey.”
