Death penalty can only be implemented after completing procedures: Corrections
Maldives Correctional Services has stated that the death penalty verdict on Hussain Humam will be carried out after implementing all mandated procedures.

Speaking to Miadhu, Media Coordinator Ahmed Luqman today said that a committee has to be formed prior to implementing the verdict. The committee is yet to be formed. He said the opinions of the next of kin has also not been sought out so far.

Islamic Ministry’s Spokesperson Mohamed Musthafa today said the Ministry had not begun proceedings to enquire about the statements of the next of kin.

Luqman said the report by the Ministry will have to be submitted to the committee, which will then forward it to the President. Upon which the President will issue a decision on Corrections regarding the report.

Luqman added that the next of kin can issue a last minute opinion on the death penalty.

“Correctional Services will question the family right before. Even if one of the next of kin refuses on implementing it cannot be carried out,” Luqman said.

He said that even though the regulation calls for a 30-day period to implement death penalty, it cannot be carried out without completing all procedures.
