Mahloof calls for a just verdict
MP for Galolhu Dhekunu Constituency Ahmed Mahloof has called on the judicial justice system to issue verdicts based on what is just rather than that of the wishes of President Yameen and Judge Baaree.

He made the statement responding to the summary charges announced by Court on the charges of obstructing justice. The charges were raised after the state had alleged that Mahloof had tried to escape Police custody, after his arrest in April.

In responding to the charges, Mahloof said he was an MP who worked closely with his constituents and therefore was not a flight risk. He said that day he had tried to protect his wife from any possible assault when Police had converged on her. He added that his wife had sustained several injuries in the scuffle.

The state had presented six Police officers as witnesses.

State lawyers said that based on the witness statements it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that Mahloof had tried to flee police custody and requested for a guilty verdict.

However, Mahloof’s lawyer said that only officer had testified that Mahloof had tried to flee. He added that there was a direct conflict of interest on part of the witnesses as they were the co-respondent of the case as well. However, he stressed the journalists who had testified for Mahloof were impartial.

Speaking to press after the summary hearings, Mahloof said the presiding Judge Baaree had given all possible opportunities to evade the charges. His lawyer, Haseen remained pessimistic on a positive verdict.

The Judge had announced that in the next hearing, the verdict will be announced, after a thorough review of the evidence and case.
