Resigned over differing opinions death penalty: Dunya
Former Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has stated that she had resigned from the Government over differing views on death penalty.

The sudden resignation was announced in the midst of a holiday. In a statement released afterwards, Dunya said that she had resigned over differing view on the death penalty and the grave doubts the public had over the status of the judiciary. She said that it would not be fair to implement the death penalty given the status of judiciary, adding that this can cause irreparable damages to the nation’s reputation.

Her statements were aimed at Supreme Court upholding the death penalty verdict on Humam over the murder of Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali and Murrath for the death of lawyer Najeeb. The relevant state agencies had said that they will implement the verdict and had begun preparations for it.

In her statement Dunya said that implementing the death penalty, especially in the situation of the judiciary, will cast grave concerns over implementation of foreign policy.

“I remain hopeful, however, that the Maldives would be able to overcome many challenges in implementing President Yameen’s foreign policy, protect and promote the independence and the good image of the Maldives, and make Maldivians proud,” Dunya said.
