Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim has called to respect and give more care and love to aged people.
The founder of the Villa Foundation, Gasim Ibrahim made this remark in reply to a question asked by Miadhu Daily on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons.
Gasim said that the people should be more aware of the status given to the old people in the religion of Islam. He said that the Prophet of Islam has shown an example in respecting the elders of the society.
Gasim said that the people of Maldives have been a people who cared and respected the elders however now this beautiful trait is fading away with the passing of age.
“It is saddening that this beautiful trait is getting ignored. This is something we should rectify. This is something that the people should be more aware of. It is time we make an effort to educate the people,” he said.
The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year.
On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.
The holiday is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
