The ruling party, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has decided to submit a resolution to the Peoples’ Majlis to cancel the allowances given to former President Mohamed Nasheed for tarnishing the image of Maldives.
In a press conference held at PPM’s headoffice, Parliamentary Group leader and Majority leader of the peoples’ Majlis, Ahmed Nihan said that the party has decided to submit a resolution to cancel the allowances granted to any former President who tarnishes the image of Maldives and thereby damage the economy of the nation.
PPM parliamentary group decided to make an amendment to the former President’s allowances and privileges Act under the 128th article of the constitution.
According to PPM, the allowances will be cancelled following an investigation by the Finance Committee of the Majlis.
PPM stated that the allowances will be cancelled for a period of 5 to 10 years considering the gravity of the statements made.
The statements that will be judged to cancel the allowances include statements that damage the economy.
Nihan said that Nasheed has been repeatedly causing much damage to the country by lying about the situation of Maldives to the international media.
He said that it is time to stop these damages done to the economy of Maldives which relies on the tourism industry.
