Government has begun to distribute the 22500 packets of dates donated by the Saudi Government. Each packet weighs two kilos.
The dates will be distributed from Thaisey koshi at the rate of 100 persons per day.
Speaking in the ceremony held to hand over the dates to the Government, Finance Minister Abdullah Jihad said this was a special gift to the Maldives and will distribute them to the citizens as soon as possible.
Saudi Deputy Ambassador Tareq Al Fayez said Saudi Government wished for citizens to have access to dates especially during Ramadan to break fasts. He said this was the Prophetic tradition and that they were seeking to preserve the tradition.
