Minister Dunya Returns after active engagement at the UN General Assembly
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dunya Maumoon has arrived in Male’ after participation in the high-level segment of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Foreign Minister Dunya delivered statements at the the 29th Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held on 22 September 2014, as well as the Scretary General’s Climate Summit held on 23 September 2014.
Speaking at the Special Sesssion on ICPD, Foreign Minister Dunya reaffirmed Maldives commitment to the further implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action: Beyond 2014.“A nation’s most precious resource is its human resource, it’s citizens – we remain committed to our people, and to the full realization of their potential” higlighted Minister Dunya.
At the Secretary General’s Climate Summit 2014, which took centre-stage at the United Nations General Assembly this year, the Minister Dunya called for a global approach to tackle the adverse effects of climate change and to accelerate the fulfillment of the pledges made at that Summit and elsewhere.
During her stay in New York, Minister Dunya participated in the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting held on 25th September 2014 andheld several bilateral meetings with her counterparts on the sidelines of the General Assembly Session. Minister Dunya also chaired an informal meeting of the SAARC Council of Ministers, a tradition that takes place during each year’s General Assembly of the United Nations.
Former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed, who is currently attending this year’s General Assembly as Special Envoy of the President of Maldives, is scheduled to deliver Maldives statement at the General Debate on 30th September 2014.
