Muhammadh Zahir Naseer passed away
Moosa Waheed
Mr. Muhammadh Zahir Naseer who has served Maldives for more than 50 years has passed away this morning at the age of 87.
Family says he has been ill for about 4 years now and they took him to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital early morning around 4 am when his movements stopped.
Mr Zahir was among the first students who were sent to Colombo for studies during the early 1940s. First he attended St. John's College,Panadura and later St. Peter's College,Colombo. He was among one the last of the initial students at Sosun Villa,Colombo.
Mr. Zahir was both a sports administrator and a health professional. In both capacities he rendered yeoman services to the nation, completely free of charge. He could have made millions out of these two professions of his but he choose humanity and selflessness. He hailed from an equally illustrious family whose services, like that of himself are too enormous to enumerate.
Mr. Zahir began his long years of service to the nation during President Amin Didi's time and continued till his last breath.
He was especially close to President Nasir,to whom he was the official interpreter for many years. President Maumoon held him in high esteem and was among the highest sports official for a long time during his administration.
President Nasheed conferred him the National Exemplary Service Medal .
President Yaameen too held him in high esteem and he used to attend various functions held by the President though he was by now unable to actively involve himself in official duties.
Mr. Zahir Naseer was a very active man. We use to see him on his bicycle till a couple of months ago.
May Allah bless him with Jannat.
