Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Adil Moosa has said the airport is the biggest success story of the nation so far, adding the airport is bringing in more recognition to the nation.
Speaking in the official ceremony to mark the Golden Jubilee of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, Adil Moosa had reflected on the many sacrifices Maldivians had made for the airport.
Adil Moosa said that he recognized the hard work carried out at a time when the country did not have the resources or the machinery to carry out even the most basic tasks. He said the airport was created by linking Gaadhoo and Hulhule’ expanding the existing area, commending the hard work and sacrifice made by many.
Adil Moosa said that in spite of the challenges, the airport operated flights to 36 cities, with the airport winning awards for their work internationally.
“Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Korean Air, various Chinese airlines, Qatar airlines, all conduct regular scheduled flights,”
He said MACL is the largest employer and the biggest revenue generator for the state.
“Over 400 women are employed in the airport,”
Adil Moosa defined the airport handover to GMR as a dark period in the airport’s history.
“In 2012, the airport earned only MVR 16 million. When it was liberated and in the first year of operation, in 2013, we earned over a billion as earnings,”
Adil Moosa especially recognized the hard work carried out by the late President Ibrahim Nasir who had pioneered the development project, noting the work carried out by President Yameen to develop the airport.
