Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has been awarded contracts to construct water and sewerage systems in B. Thulhaadhoo, R. Hulhudhuffaaru, N. Velidhoo and G. A. Kolamaafushi.
The agreement was signed on behalf of Environment Ministry by Environment Minister Toriq Ibrahim, and on behalf of MWSC by the company’s Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.
The projects are being funded through state budget and loan aid from OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
Speaking in the ceremony, OFID Senior Operations Officer Shima Al Shabi said that OFID had been running development projects across the globe for 40 years. Out of which, she said that OFID had been working closely with the Maldives, and that they had run 19 projects in the country successfully. In her address, she reflected on the close relationship between the citizens of the Maldives, Saudi Arabia and stated that OFID will seek to maintain that relationship.
Minister Thoriq said that the project had taken some time to come into fruition, as they had to complete all processes, international procedures associated with the project. He added that additional projects, with OFID assistance will be brought forward in the near future.
MD Fazul also spoke during the ceremony, saying that MWSC was one of the most capable companies in the country at the moment when it comes to water and sewerage projects. And that the company would complete the projects given to them within the time period allocated.
He said the company had its own machinery to produce the pipes needed for the project, adding that the company was seeking to expand its capacity. Fazul said new machinery was scheduled to arrive within four months.
“We are currently conducting projects in 10 islands, five islands are being designed. Out of the 33 projects we took on last year, 22 had been finished and handed over,” Fazul said.
