Indian HC facilitates a training for 26 teachers on special needs education

Indian High Commission in Male’ has facilitated a training programme for teachers specializing in special needs education.

High Commissioner of India to Maldives Rajeev Shahare handed over a cheque for USD 8177 (approx. MRF 126,000) to Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC) at a small ceremony held at the Indian High Commission today. The financial assistance would be used towards training of 26 Maldivian teachers from Male’, GDh. Thinadhoo, Fuamulak, Kulhudhufushi to attend a training programme on mainstreaming children with special needs, which will be hosted by Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust of India. The cheque was received by Ms. Hawla Ahmed Didi, Managing Director of ARC.

Speaking at the ceremony, High Commissioner Shahare highlighted India’s commitment towards training and human resources development in Maldives. He assured that India would continue to support for short-term training courses in such special areas. He also announced one scholarship slot every year to interested Maldivians to pursue their degree program in India in the area of education for Special Needs Children.

“Since such training opportunities are limited for Maldivian teachers both at home and abroad, we are extremely grateful to the Indian government and the High Commission for their sponsorship of this training“ Hawla Ahmed Didi, Managing Director of ARC noted during the ceremony.

During the training participants will learn the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach in teaching children with disabilities and focuses on issues such as early intervention and assessment needs of children with disabilities.

The Govt. of India is committed to capacity building in the Maldives in the field of education and 50 scholarships are granted every year to Maldivian students. In addition, India offers short-term training courses to Maldivian government officials, independent institutions, media organizations and NGOs in India. High Commission of India also organizes specialized training programs as per the requirements of the Maldives government as part of the skills development program. A 2-year Technology Adoption Project, through which around 5000 Maldivian teachers and youth were equipped with IT and IT-related skills, was recently conducted with Govt. of India’s assistance of USD 5 million. High Commission of India has also supported NGOs in Maldives like ARC, Maldives Autism Association in the past.
