President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that the tone of even the most vocal opponents had changed.
He made the statement speaking to the ceremony held to finalize the move of Gaadhoo citizens to Fonadhoo held this evening in Fonadhoo.
President Yameen said the parliament members were currently on a trip to Sri Lanka to brief international partners on the current actual situation at the ground and that he was gladdened due to the results of the team. He said this was clear sign that the tone of the most vocal opponents had begun to change.
President Yameen said the UN representative had also appealed to issue an appeal to Supreme Court to expedite the cases against the former President Nasheed and other opposition leaders.
“That is something I have to do. Even though I don’t have to do, it will be processed through the system. I will not and have not interfered in the judicial justice system. But if the cases linger in the system it is a responsibility meted to me,”
He said that the cases against those individuals have to be finalized in the Supreme Court and that future decisions will be based on the rulings.
“We have to come to a consensus on the issue,”
He stressed that had there not been any internal divisions and power grabs, the development of the nation would have been exponential. President added that he had been elected as President and therefore must be given the opportunity to govern as President, without any conditions or prerequisites.
He added that he had been elected to fulfill the development pledge and that he alone was accountable to the public.
