President Abdullah Yameen has stated that democracy without economic development was meaningless and will be eventually rejected by the public.
He made the statement speaking to the citizens of Kudahuvadhoo island this evening.
In his address President Yameen said that there were many who spoke of democracy but those words and initiatives had failed to benefit either the public or the nation.
“Yesterday itself many had carried out such an initiative, but had failed to make note of what was most important to the public,”
President Yameen said many nations had the best interest of Maldivians at heart, nations that only wished to assist and not interfere in the domestic policies of the nation. He said the country has to reflect on this aspect. President said that Arab nations, China among other nations had limited their involvement to investing in the infrastructure.
He said that the statements by some groups had halted the aid and grants to the country, noting especially the statements made regarding terrorism and judicial justice system.
President Yameen said Maldives had always had a unique identity and that we do not have to follow the lead of any other nation in determining our affairs.
