PG hands over several legal powers to MIRA
Prosecutor General (PG) has handed over several legal powers to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). The agreement was signed in a ceremony held this morning in MIRA. PG Aishath Bisham and Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeed Mohamed signed the agreement on behalf their respective agencies.

Bisham said the agreement was compiled under clause 2015/2, on extending legal assistance on criminal issues. The law states procedures on exchanging information with foreign nations on criminal investigations and trials. The law states procedures on taking witness statements, extradition for purposes of criminal investigations.

“Additionally, procedures on search for evidence, halting transfer of goods, search and documentation, bank records, financial records, both actual and attested copies, and usage of such evidence will be made possible,”

Bisham said the purpose of the MOU was to provide procedures for MIRA to function legally, in case MIRA is approached by a foreign party for assistance. She said the MOU had clearly specified their mandate, noting that this will greatly ease the work of the agency.
