Several activities were held in the old Jamaluddin School to mark the World Book Day and Copyrights Day.
Various activities such as book museum, book releases, writers corners and readings were carried out today.
Speaking in the opening ceremony, Maldives Library Association President Fathimath Nashath said the occasion is marked colorfully over a hundred nations. She said the Maldives, especially schools and libraries, had to take a proactive role in marking the day. She urged all to use the occasion to foster a better love and understanding of Dhivehi language as well.
Nashath marked that the number of books aimed at children written in Dhivehi language was minimal.
National Library Director Aminath Shiuna noted that countries such as Egypt took a proactive role, by launching the “Reading for All” program in 1991 to foster intellectual stimulation on a national level, had yielded profitable results. She said the program was carried out for 10 years. Shiuna said this was the appropriate time to launch such a program.
Winners of the book display contest was awarded in today’s ceremony as well. Maldives National University, Haa Dhaal Naivaadhoo School and Muhyiddin School claimed 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. A total of seven parties took part in the competition. The awards were handed to the winners by Chief Guest Dr. Abdu Sattar Yoosuf.
Many activities were held from 4-6pm as well. The activities of the day are marked in association with Maldives Library Association, National Library and Dhivehi Language Academy.
