Rakeedhoo to be powered by solar during daylight hours
STELCO has stated that with the introduction of the hybrid energy system initiated in Vaavu Rakeedhoo will facilitate enough energy, allowing the company to power down diesel generators during daylight hours.

With the system, energy will be provided in the island via solar energy and batteries. As a result, STELCO said the 50 percent of fuel expenditure will be reduced.

Asian Development Bank’s Director General Juan Miranda Maldives had provided electricity to the whole of the country, with Sri Lanka aiming to reach 100 percent electricity coverage. He added that ADB had and will provide all necessary aid for the energy sector in the country.

Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim added the nation was moving towards establishing renewable energy all across the country, noting the Rakeedhoo project was part of this initiative. He said due to the initiative, the expenditure on fuel will be reduced and the savings can be invested in other developmental initiatives.

Minister Thoriq further said that under the initiative to reduce electricity cost, 270,000 LED lights will be distributed across the country. Every household is to receive five LED lights and this will further reduce costs.

Minister Thoriq said a change of lifestyle and adoption of energy reduction plans will bring a healthy change in both private individuals and companies. He also noted that BML had started a MVR 500 million loan scheme, on a minimal interest rate, for energy sector projects.

Sheikh Moosa Nizar, MP for Rakeedhoo, part of the Keyodhoo Consituency, said the reduction of oil dependency was a crucial national security issue, thanking the Government for the initiative to lessen the electricity dependence.

“We have distributed 7000 LED bulbs. A 10 kilowatt solar PV system is installed in Rakeedhoo. We are conducting renewable electricity projects in Male’ and Dhihdhoo area,” STELCO Managing Director Abdu Shakur said.
