Minister of State for Health Ministry and famous orthopedic doctor, Dr. Mohamed Habeeb has stated that having trained and qualified local doctors in hospitals was the key to create trust in the health sector.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held to handover scholarships to train doctors in specialist areas from Nepal’s Tribhuan University.
Dr. Habeeb said issues that happen to Maldivians can be addressed by trained Maldivians, adding that trust in the sector can only be gained with the sector increasing the number of Maldivians to the sector.
Dr. Habeeb appealed to scholarship winners to serve the sector sincerely.
“A bond is not important. Sincere service to the nation is required. We have to resort to locals if we do not have trained locals then we have to hire expatriates. There is a huge associated training cost for constant hiring,” he said.
Dr. Habeeb commended the Government’s initiative in training specialists for health sector, noting that in the past two years a record number of had been sent for training in specialist fields. He added all expense associated with the training will be borne by the Government, further stating that additional individuals will be sent to train specialists.
