President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that the mega project of the development of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport will become the biggest revenue earner of the nation in the years to come.
The inauguration ceremony of the key development project of INIA, which includes the new runway, apron, fuel farm and the cargo terminal, was held at the Rannabandeyri Hall of Dhraubaaruge.
President Yameen said that the tourism sector can only be rapidly expanded with the development of the airport. Therefore, he said the development was essential to the future of the nation.
He added that the terminal development in the second phase will also improve the financial status of the nation, noting the revamped terminal will provide many facilities to passengers. President Yameen further noted that the duty free shops in the airport will expand, becoming a duty free village.
President Yameen said that the previous governments had leased several islands and that the present Government had already leased 70 areas for development as well. He noted the tourism will boom following the opening of all resorts.
The President said without the loan, development will have taken additional years. He further said mega projects will allow faster payback on the loans.
“I wish to thank the Chinese President, Government for this. They are not just constructing the bridge, they are also developing the airport at a reduced interest loan,” he said.
In his address, President Yameen also recognized the assistance provided by India for the development of the Maldives, adding that Maldives was willing to work with all nations in the spirit of development.
He also reflected on the importance of diversification of the economy, adding that the airport will usher in such diversification.
