America wants to ensure sustainable development of democracy in Maldives: Ambassador
US Ambassador to Maldives and Sri Lanka Atul Keshap has stated that America had a vision of a Maldives that is peaceful, prosperous, democratic, and stable, with human rights, impartial application of the rule of law‎, and equal opportunity for all.

He made the statement speaking in a ceremony held in Hotel Jen.

The Ambassador said the Maldives had a pivotal role in ensuring the spread of counter violent extremism, and to curb the spread of terrorism, with freedom to media.

The Ambassador said he had met with key stakeholders in the past three days and emphasized that the recent events in Maldives remain a matter of concern.

He added that he had held discussions with Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal recently, where she said that “We strongly encourage the Maldives to return to the democratic practices that will ensure its future success.”

The Ambassador said America was ready to provide assistance to the Maldives in all areas possible. He noted that USA had provided $12 million for relief and reconstruction assistance in Maldives,
including an upgrade of damaged water supply, sewage, and power systems. He also reflected on the many other projects run in the country with US assistance, especially for the health sector.

Ambassador Keshap said the US provided the assistance for the betterment and development of the nation and will continue to do so.
