48 hours’ prosecution to be arranged for minor crimes
Home Minister Umar Naseer said that the Ministry was working to arrange so that minor crimes will get prosecuted within 48 hours and drug charges get prosecuted within 24 hours.

He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held Sunday night to mark the 83rd anniversary of Maldives Police Service, noting that this will expedite the cases, with procedures set between Police, Prosecutor General and Attorney General.

Minister Umar said that due to the complications in the legal systems, cases involving drugs and ordinary crimes languish within the legal system for years, which is an incentive to proceed ahead with the crimes.

“A drug user arrested takes four years to rehabilitate. If he doesn’t undergo treatment within that period, then he gets the green light to commit more crimes,” he said.

Minister Umar added that even in UK, Police had begun prosecuting cases involving minor crimes.

He added that the Police was working on establishing a recording vehicles and proceeding the sticker process through an SMS system. Minister Umar said that once the system is established the 131 officers employed in the process can be employed in other areas of Police.
