World Health Organization (WHO) has donated six ambulances and medical equipment to the Maldives.
The handover ceremony was held in STO grounds this evening. Health Minister Irthisham Adam accepted the equipment on behalf of the Government.
Among the items donated by WHO were interagency emergency health its, countertop platelet incubators, haier medical freezers, vaccine carriers, natal weighing scales, aerospray pro slide stainer, ice lined refigerators.
Speaking in the ceremony, Dr. Arvind Mathur said that additional equipment will be given to the country. He noted that WHO had granted innumerable assistance over the 50 year period, adding that they will continue to do so.
Dr. Mathur also noted that Maldives had been quite successful in curbing the spread of communicable diseases and added that now Maldives has to work on halting the spread of non-communicable diseases. He urged health service providers to give better service to the public and to increase the capabilities of health service providers.
In her address, Health Minister Irthisham Adam noted that last year itself the Government had managed to secure MVR 44 million worth of equipment.
