Social protection can only be assured from own society: UNICEF
UNICEF program specialist Mohamed Naeem has said that removing children from their surroundings to another area proved ineffective in their development, noting that solutions had to be found from their surroundings.

He made the statement speaking in the “social protection for all” and bottleneck analysis program for FCSC managers’ orientation program held this morning in Gender Ministry.

“Studies show that removing children from their surroundings and transfer those to state managed centers proved ineffective for their development. The children suffer in those centers,” he said.

Naeem added that formation of various groups to responsibly address the issues was a step in the right direction. He noted proactive measures such as this will resolve the issue.

Naeem stressed that NGOs that work at the islands will benefit once the laws at the Parliament on social protection were passed.

“Those NGOs can get legal protection and backing once those bills are passed. Our analysis had shown that this was imperative forthis nation,” he said.

The program is carried out by Gender Ministry. Gender Ministry’s Director Fathimath Shidmeen said that under the program, individuals will be trained to work in the island centers before 2018.
