Scouts, Girl Guides to be awarded badges on social responsibility
Environment Ministry, Girl Guides and Scouts signs an MOU to promote social responsibility and award badges for their initiative.

Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, Girl Guide Association’s Deputy Chief Commissioner Aishath Shaaheenaa Adam and Scout Association’s Chief Commissioner Hussain Abdullah signed the agreement on behalf of their respective agencies.

Speaking in the ceremony, the initiative was part of the Ministry’s initiative on the low carbon energy island strategy, to raise awareness climate change and energy efficiency. Once the guides and scouts are aware of the initiative, they will be awarded merit badges.

In his address, Minister Thoriq noted the effects of climate change on the nation and as such awareness has to be raised on the issues. He said that as the two associations had a membership of 10,000 members, raising awareness among these groups will be a huge boost to the initiative.

Minister Thoriq urged other organizations to take part in the initiative headed by the Ministry.

The two organizations highlighted the importance of climate change awareness and pledged full participation in the iniative. Hussain Abdullah said that the global population of the scouts was 42 million.

“When our scouts have a Ministry approved badge, they will raise questions, enquire on the badge. This will be a boost to the initiative,” he said.
