Environment Ministry’s State Minister Abdullah Majeed has said that global temperatures had increased by 1 degree Celsius from 2000 onwards, adding that 2015 was the hottest year.
Speaking to Hiriya school students on climate change, Majeed said that while 2015 was the hottest year, the first two months of this year also recorded abnormally high temperatures.
He stressed that the climate change issues can only be resolved by united efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He added that all nations have to sign and implement the Paris agreement.
Majeed added that the climate change effects were felt locally noting that the rains had been delayed every year, with many islands running out of clean drinking water almost every year.
Majeed also said that the youth participation in climate efforts was vital, adding that he hoped that youth leaders will work on combating issues of climate change.
