Indian hotel giants Oberoi and Leela have signed MOUs with the Government of Maldives to invest in the Maldives.
Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer made the announcement after concluding his visit to India, conducted at the invitation of his Indian counterpart, Mahesh Sharma.
He added that other reputed Indian businesses had expressed interest in investing in the country. Minister Zameer also noted that the two countries had held discussions on forming a working group to further strengthen the tourism sectors in the two countries.
Indian resort groups, such as Taj, has had a long history of conducting business in the country, with Maldives fast becoming a holiday destination for Indian celebrities and A-listers such as Sonam Kapoor and Amithab Bahchan.
Tour operators had said that if the average tour prices in the Maldives had been reduced, then tourism will be boosted with the influx of middle class Indian tourists.
