Police appeals Nasheed not to defame the Police with lies seeking fame

Maldives Police Service has appealed former President Mohamed Nasheed and all people not to defame the Police by spreading lies in the international community seeking fame.

Maldives Police Service stated this in a press release issued yesterday in view of the claims made by former President Mohamed Nasheed in his interview to “The Independent” where he alleged that the military and Police of Maldives recruits terrorists.

Maldives Police Service stated that the claims of Nasheed have no truth to it and are lies.

They stated that no one should make such blatant lies to gain publicity and achieve a political motive.

In addition to this, Maldives Police Service stated that there are only twenty people who have connections to such Jihadi groups and none of them are from Maldives Police Service or the military.

According to the Independent, Nasheed claimed there were links between jihadist groups and both the country’s military and the police force.

“Radical Islam is getting very, very strong in the Maldives,” he said. “Their strength in the military and in the police is very significant. They have people in strategic positions within both.

“Of the 200 people who have gone to jihad, the vast majority are ex-military.

“What’s happening is they are taking people in for training and they will go away [to fight abroad]. They are using the Maldives military to train their people.”
