The statements expressed in last Friday’s sermon over the first Islamic nation and the Prophet’s role as the leader of the first nation have come under increased scrutiny.
Some scholars have said that presidents were chosen by the people, noting that the citizens of Medina had never elected the Prophet to be their leader. The scholar said that the Prophet was sent to the whole of mankind and that the citizens of Medina had only accepted what God had sent to earth.
The scholar added that therefore, saying that the Prophet was the first leader of Islamic nation created in Medina was an erroneous claim.
“Presidents are chosen by the public. However, the divine message God revealed to the Prophet was for the entire mankind, separate from us. What we can do is accept God’s will. Therefore, there is no room to say that the Prophet was a President,” he said.
Some scholars have said that using the term President to describe the Prophet was demeaning to the Prophet, as it would rank him on the same scale as President Obama and the like.
