President Abdulllah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has passed to reduce the electricity rates.
In a tweet posted by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stated that the tariff rates for electricity would be reduced starting from 1st February, adding that the President has plans to further reduce the prices.
No additional details have been revealed regarding the proposed drop in tariffs.
The Government had slashed the subsidies that was previously given to the public from the 1st of this month. Prices for usage below 400 units had been reduced, while the prices for usage above 400 units had been jacked up.
The Energy Authority will soon announce the tariffs. Most families in Male’ are dependent on one meter for electricity and as such, the bills are extremely high. Many had expressed concern over the recent subsidy slashes.
