Islamic Ministry’s Deputy Minister Sheikh Ibrahim Ahmed said that it was deeply concerning that 19 percent of domestic abuse cases involved minors under the age of 15.
He made the statement delivering the Friday sermon.
Sheikh Ibrahim Ahmed said that a UN report said that 36 percent of women in the Maldives, suffered some form of abuse, either sexual or physical, in their life. He added that out of this 19 percent of the cases involved minors below the age of 15, noting that this was deeply concerning.
He added that due to this women were in a constant state of emotional distress. He stressed that in Islam, the Quran and Prophetic tradition, violence is not condoned, irrespective of gender. The Imam said that children should not be harmed in any way, noting that the Prophet has said that children were butterflies in Paradise.
In his sermon, he added that caring for women and children were highly emphasized in Islam, adding that the action itself will pave a way for redemption with God.
