President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has assured that Maldives will remain a safe destination for the tourists and locals alike.
He made the statements in an op-ed piece written in Washington Post dated 9th February, in response to the statements made by the former President Mohamed Nasheed, that Maldives was a breeding ground for radicalism and that both tourists and locals alike were in imminent danger.
President Yameen said that Nasheed’s statements, baseless and factless at best, were wholly damaging to the entire nation. He added that Nasheed had craftily manipulated the media narrative, exploiting the fourth aspect of democracy.
“It is worth remembering that as journalists began to ask questions at Mr. Nasheed’s press conference last month, the live feed was cut, denying access to thousands of Maldivians watching at home. A member of our embassy was barred from attending,” President Yameen’s article said.
In his article, President Yameen said that Nasheed’s statements had a detrimental effect on the nation, designed to twist and fabricate the truth for personal gain.
