President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has opened the west side waterfront artificial beach, named “Rasfannu”.
The beach was opened in a special ceremony held Sunday night in the area.
Speaking in the opening ceremony, President Yameen reflected on the importance of such open areas, especially for urban areas. He said that the face of Male’ did not represent that of an island, while Maldives was the chair of AOSIS, the world body on small island nations.
President Yameen added that Male’ is a concrete jungle, adding that citizens do not want to remain cooped up in such a jungle. He further said that roads and open areas have to be made safe, for the public to enjoy those areas.
“Male’ is surrounded by sea, without a beach. We have experienced many natural disasters due to this and we have to be prepared for such incidents,” he said.
“Rasfannu” was opened with many facilities and represents the horizon of a resort. Markers have been placed in the swimming areas, depicting the depth of sea at that point. An additional area is dedicated to fishing, with barbeque areas. Swings, sun umbrellas, the traditional holhuashi’ and shower facilities are located in the area as well. All services in the area are provided free of charge.
Restaurant services are scheduled to begin in the near future.
Smoking is banned in the beach.
President Yameen had thanked all those who had worked on the project in the past five months to make the project a resounding success.
