MDP proceeds ahead with the support of non-Muslims: President Maumoon
Former President and PPM President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom has said that MDP is a party that allies and proceeds ahead with the support of non-Muslims.

Speaking in a press conference at PPM Office, the former President said that this is a worrisome issue.

“If they adhere to Islamic principles, protect Maldivian independence and values, promote social and economic projects, then we would not have this divide between them and us,” he said.

President Maumoon said that MDP does not respect Islam and Islamic values and that this was evident in some of the statements made by the party members. He added that some of the derogatory statements made by MDP leader President Nasheed, regarding the Prophet, had contravened against Islam itself. He said that a true Muslim will not offend the Prophet or say any statement in that manner.

The former President said that MDP had planned to construct a Christian church in the country in their tenure.

“Therefore, we can clearly surmise that they do not wish to promote Islam,” he said.

“A senior figure in the Nasheed cabinet had said that the English Ambassador had said that they supported and backed Nasheed in 2008 elections on the promise that a church will be built in the first year of his tenure as President. It was on this promise they had pitched into the elections,” President Maumoon said.

“Therefore, one can clearly see that this is not a personal grudge, but a national issue,” President said.
