A high ranking figure in the local tourism sector has said that the threat from the legal team of former President Mohamed Nasheed is more than that of any terror attack on the country from extremists.
Speaking to Miadhu, he said that the statements of Amal Clooney and her co-consuls defaming statements given to the media, was more damaging and pose a bigger threat to the visitors to the country. He doubted the intentions of the statements.
“We have seen this happen in the past. This is not a new thing. Such warnings are given to discourage tourists to come here. It will not happen, god willing. The number of tourists are increasing. Following that they will facilitate attacks against tourists, later on saying that they had warned so,” he said.
He further said that such attacks were perpetrated by agents as part of a conspiracy to ensure that Maldives became an outpost of EU.
“However, that cannot proceed as planned. Maldives will remain as Maldives. We will welcome all irrespective of nationality, as we have demonstrated over the years,” he said.
He added that the whole world believed that Maldives is a peaceful, welcoming nation and a smear campaign propagated by a team of lawyers cannot change that image.
Amal Clooney, noted and respected human rights barrister, has been warning tourists on internatonal media not to come to Maldives for the fear of an imminent attack.
