A ceremony was held at Marble cafe’ this morning to mark the day. In this ceremony Minister of Environment and Energy Mr.Thoriq Ibrahim and heads of the Ministry have participated. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted that the government is working on banning the usage and import of ozone depleting substances and he also said that the Maldives has achieved the goals of Montreal Protocol. Minister Thoriq Ibrahim also expressed his gratitude to the parties who assist in protecting the ozone layer.
In this ceremony an Association which would represent Refrigeration and Air-conditioning sector wasinaugurated by Minister Thoriq Ibrahim. This would further support to stop ozone depleting substances from being released to the atmosphere. An agreement was also signed between Ministry of Environment and Energy and Faculty of Engineering and Technology of Maldives National University. This agreement was signed to held awareness workshops on protecting the ozone layer. Minister Mr.Thoriq Ibrahim signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry and Vice Chancellor Mr. Hassan Hameed signed the agreement on behalf of Faculty of Engineering Technology.
Gas Recovery and Reclamation Centre which is established in Hulhumale’ by Maldives Institute of Technology was inaugurated by Minister Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim on the occasion of World Ozone Day 2014.This centre would work on reducing the ozone depleting substances to the atmosphere.
