Opposition MDP has issued a statement on Thursday welcoming the Government’s decision to send former President Mohamed Nasheed abroad for medical treatment.
A statement issued by the Party, called the decision a step in the right direction in resolving the political crisis facing the nation. The party called on the government to follow through and take necessary action in a swift manner.
“We call upon the government to release political detainees President Mohamed Nasheed, Adhaalath Party President Imran Abdulla, Colonel Mohamed Nazim and other political leader and over 1700 detainees whose criminal procedures are at varying points”, the statement said.
The statement also called for reforms in the judicial justice system, enforce rule of law, strengthen democratic values and ensure the independence of the independent institutions. MDP’s statement further called on the Government to protect human rights, individual rights and to give room for peaceful political expression.
MDP had also called on the Government to begin work to promote the country as respectable and respected nation and to foster relations with international partners.
