Maldives has been elected as the Executive Director of the newly funded Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
The State appointed Governor Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizz on arrival to the country after taking part in opening of the Bank, said that Maldives has been appointed as the interim Executive Director for the next six months.
Dr. Muizz said that Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has been appointed as the Alternate Director and that later Minister Saeed will be appointed as Executive Director later on. Dr. Muizz stressed that this was a resounding success for the country.
“This is the first time Maldives has been given the opportunity to head such an institution. AIIB has given this opportunity to this country,” he said.
Dr. Muizz said that Maldives had been granted the position for the next two years, in addition to another two year two terms. Additionally, Maldives will have the opportunity to appoint an advisor for a period of four years.
Dr. Muizz added that these opportunities will facilitate much of progress to the country.
He said that he had met the newly appointed President of the AIIB, Mr. Jin and had held discussions on the development projects for the country.
“Mr. Jin is a person who had worked in the Maldives, he understands the needs of the country. He had assured that he will seek to secure funds for the various projects,” he said.
Dr. Muizz said the bank will focus on securing funds in a very short period of time.
