Official ceremony to mark the day Maldives embraced Islam held in Guraidhoo
The official ceremony to mark the day Maldives embraced Islam was held in K. Guraidhoo. The ceremony was opened by the recitation of Quran.

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad was the chief guest of the ceremony. In his address, Dr. Ziyad said that the occasion Maldives embraced Islam was not refutable.

Minister said that there were remarkable similarities between the Egyptian story of sacrificing virgins to Nile River and the Maldivian lore of embracing Islam. He said the two stories served as reminders that even though the two stories were believed to be of supernatural origins, the people saw the wisdom of the true belief in Islam and embraced it willingly.

Maldives embraced Islam in 548 Hijra or 1153 AD, after an official dictate was issued by the ruling Sultan. The day was commemorated by Sultan Mohamed Fareed’s rule.

Ministers, state dignitaries, senior government officials and members of the public took part in the ceremony.

The ceremony was concluded by a special supplication for the day, which was read by Sheikh Ali Shareef.
