Nazim cleared for surgery in Singapore
Former Defense Minister Colonel Mohamed Nazim has been cleared for surgery in Singapore.

Speaking to Miadhu, Spokesperson for Maldives Correctional Service Moosa Rameez said Nazim was cleared for a heart surgery and had been released for 15 days.
“If additional treatment is required, then they can submit medical documents,” he said.

Rameez said the family would need to take the decision on when Nazim will leave for treatment.

An appeal hearing for Nazim has been scheduled for the 5th of this month and it is expected that the trail is nearing completion.

Nazim, who had served as the defense minister President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom, is serving an 11-year prison sentence for smuggling and possessing dangerous weapons.

The defense lawyers had repeatedly asserted that the state’s lawyers had failed to prove a substantial link between the weapon and Nazim.

During the Criminal Court trial, Nazim’s attorneys had submitted more than 50 witnesses.

The Criminal Court, however, did not summon most of the witnesses. High Court is currently summoning the remaining witnesses presented by Nazim during the trial but were not brought in.
