Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that the agreement with Tatwa company, initiated by President Yameen, has been annulled, effective from 13th of December.
Speaking in the ceremony to hand over waste management in Male’ city to Waste Management Corporation, Minister Thoriq said after 2008, waste management in Male’ had been ineffective and mismanaged.
“The agreement with Tatwa, formed by the MDP Government, had prevented the Government from carrying out any additional project. Tatwa company had not met their terms and failed to carry out the waste management projects,” he said.
Minister Thoriq said that all formal plans and procedures for the Waste Management Corporation had been completed, as well as appointing members to the Board and employees.
He added that a collection system and procedures to collect and remove waste from Male’ will be established soon. Minister Thoriq noted that a state of the art incinerator will be installed in Thilafushi in the next two years to prevent open air incineration.
