A hearing of the appeal case for jailed former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim is to be held later today.
The hearings will be held at 11.15 am and 1.00 pm at High Court today.
Both the defense and many commentators have expressed concerns over the Criminal Court sentence, citing the manner in which his residence was searched. They have noted that the residence was searched after Nazim and his family were removed from their respective rooms. Additionally, many have disputed that a firearm will be kept in such a transparent manner, that it was immediately discovered.
Nazim’s lawyers stated that once the firearm was discovered the Police had not proceeded with any other checking. They also note that proper security measures were not taken when searching the location of a suspected firearm, citing that MNDF was also not used.
Nazim’s family has continued to issue appeals for a just and fair trial and to reveal the truth behind the documents and photos submitted to the trial.
Up to his arrest, Nazim was one of the most proactive cabinet members, bringing a multitude of changes to the development of MNDF in his tenure as Defense Minister.
Many serving officers admit that Nazim had carried out many projects, spearheaded by former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed, to make MNDF a more productive agency.
Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, one of the persons who was closely involved in the case, is now facing weapons charges.
